Majete Wildlife Reserve

Majete Main Camp

Majete stands as a remarkable example of successful conservation efforts, having transformed from a declining reserve to a thriving wildlife sanctuary. Here, diverse herds of animals including zebra, buffalo, kudu, and sable antelope roam freely, providing ample prey for the resident lion population. Along the Shire River, elephants enjoy refreshing baths while hippo pods rest on the banks. Majete also offers sightings of rare species such as Lichtenstein’s hartebeest, klipspringer, and reintroduced African wild dogs, the park is also a paradise for birdwatchers with endemic species like Livingstone’s flycatcher, Boehm’s bee-eater, and the racket-tailed roller commonly spotted.

The range of activities available highlights Majete’s success story in conservation. Once devoid of life, the reserve now boasts abundant flora and fauna, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty in a relatively remote corner of Africa.

Rooted in history and dedicated to conservation, Liwonde National Park earned its status in 1973, thanks to the advocacy of Chief Liwonde, who recognized its significance for Malawi’s wildlife legacy. Presently, a collaborative effort comprising local village leaders, farmers, a judiciary, and African Parks, custodians of the Mvuu Wilderness Lodge and Camp, spearheads vigorous conservation initiatives. Furthermore, their commitment extends to fostering community development projects surrounding the park, pivotal in fortifying Liwonde’s reputation as a premier safari destination.
